What was the true HP of the 426 Hemi?
MoPar 426 Hemi
The 426 street Hemi was rated at 425 horsepower from the factory. This Chrysler dyno sheet from decades ago and this close-to-stock dyno session of a new 426 Hemi both put the gross horsepower rating at about 470 horsepower without full exhausts and other engine-driven accessories.
The 426 Hemi was better than a 440 six pack because it had more horsepower and faster 1/4 mile and 0–60 times. The 426 Hemi had 425 horsepower at 5,000 rpm while the 440 six pack had 390 horsepower at 4,700 rpm.
The 1964 season was an over the top success for the 426 Hemi, with cars featuring the engine taking the first four spots at the Daytona 500 (with the win going to Richard Petty).
Thanks to its Supercharged 6.2L High-Output HEMI® V8 engine, the SRT® Super Stock has the highest horsepower of any production car and is the most powerful muscle car( Disclosure3).
Fuel Ratings
The city number is not exactly light years away from the fuel “efficiency” of the original Challenger, but that 23 mpg highway number was simply a fantasy four-and-a-half decades ago. Most fuel estimates for the 426 Hemi ranged from 6-8 mpg.
Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 - 1969
This powertrain gave the Camaro ZL1 500 horsepower and was capable of hitting 0-60 moh in a staggering 5.3 seconds. Only 69 units of this model were ever built, which makes it one of the rarest and most important American muscle cars of the era.
One of the rarest muscle cars ever made is without a doubt the 1970-71 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible, and one has just been dragged out of a dusty storage unit for the first time since 1976. This triple black Hemi-powered 'Cuda convertible is one of only 14 produced for 1970.
In short, the 392 BGE block is the strongest engine block currently offered in a domestic production vehicle and can comfortably contain the pressure for up to 1,600 hp.
The second generation (Gen II) 426 was based on this design, but unlike the street-based Gen I HEMI, it was originally built specifically for racing. The slightly detuned street 426 HEMI offered 425 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 490 ft. -lbs. of torque at 4,000 rpm.
According to Motortrend, the 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda four-speed convertible is the rarest breed of Mopar cars in existence. Apparently only three four-speed manual transmission models were ever made, boosting a 7.0-liter Hemi 426 V-8 engine, 425 horsepower, and remarkable 490 lb-ft of torque.
How much is an original 426 Hemi engine worth?
These engines are hard to buy as engine crates, which makes pricing them significantly difficult. However, Mecum has sold two 426 Hemi display engines for $148,500 and $209,000, their rarity significantly bumping up their value.
When we say this car is rare, we mean rare. Only 550 Dodge Charger Daytonas were manufactured by Chrysler in 1969. Only 70 were made with a 426 Hemi engine. Only 22 were 4 speed.
The Hellephant Name
That's the nickname given to the second-generation Hemi that came out in race-only form in 1964, then in street form in 1966 as the Street Hemi. It got the name "elephant engine" due to its large size, heavy weight, and prodigious ground-pounding power.
Chrysler's Biggest Hemi: 10 Feet Long, 16 Cylinders, and 2220 Cubic Inches! A key step in the development of the famous Chrysler Hemi V8 was this monster: a 2500-horsepower aircraft engine designed for the U.S. armed forces in World War II.
The word "hemi" is a shortening of the word "hemispherical," and as it relates to engines, means a type of engine that has a hemispherically shaped combustion chamber.
Known officially as the Mopar Hellephant 426 Supercharged Hemi Crate Engine, it carries part number (P/N) P5160194 and wears a price tag of $29,995.
Based on data from 6 vehicles, 360 fuel-ups and 52,047 miles of driving, the 1969 Dodge Charger gets a combined Avg MPG of 11.99 with a 0.51 MPG margin of error.
Nicknamed the “Elephant” because of its size, the 426 HEMI was so dominant in its debut, NASCAR changed its rules for engines and began requiring all engines to be available in production vehicles.

What Hemi was in Joe Dirt?
One of the funniest scenes depicts Joe Dirt at the impound lot: financially unable to retrieve his mint '67 Plymouth Hemi GTX convertible, he's buying the Charger Daytona instead . . . for $450.00!
Max agreed that the 426 heads will not fit the 440 block without necessary component upgrades, and a company called SVE (Stage V Engineering) makes the kit you will need. But Max emphasized that the layman answer is no, the Hemi heads will not fit a stock 440 block. (See www.stageV.com for more).
The Hemi first debuted in 1951 and the most renowned of all, the 426 Hemi, was built from 1964 through 1971. Accounts of how many were produced vary, but DiamlerChrysler says 6,671 were built.
As you may have already guessed, the hands-down winner among the fastest muscle cars of the 1960s remains the Shelby Cobra. This car attained higher performance figures than any other production vehicle of its era. The 1963 Shelby Cobra 260 boasted the ability to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
McLaren F1 LM
The LM was a monster. 0 – 60 mph was over in 2.9 seconds and it could go from standstill to 100 mph in less than five seconds. Top speed was 243 mph.
Porsche 911 turbo – 4.9 secs. Also known as the 930, the Porsche 911 turbo stood proud as the quickest car built in the 1970s. It posted a 0-60mph time of 5.5 secs when it made its debut in 1975 with a 3.0-litre engine, and the 3.3-litre flat-six introduced in 1978 slashed that time to 4.9 secs.
The 440 cu in (7.2 L) RB was produced from 1965 until 1978, making it the last version of the Chrysler RB block.
The 5.7 Hemi is 345 ci and the '05 version makes 345 hp (as rated in the Ram 1500), or exactly one horsepower-per-cubic-inch.
From 1968-1970, the 383 Magnum was rated at 335 hp, although Mopar fans who remember these free-revving engines would compare seat-of-the-pants pull to the 440.
What is the difference between a Dodge 383 and 440?
The major difference between these two Mopar legends is the deck height of the block: 9.98-inch for the 383 and 10.725-inch for the 440.
But Max emphasized that the layman answer is no, the Hemi heads will not fit a stock 440 block. (See www.stageV.com for more). The Stage V conversion kits costs $4,000, but you'll need lots more to finish it up including 440 block work, new rods, KB stroker crank, pistons, etc.
"What you're seeing here is a 572-cubic-inch Hemi (that's 9.4L) that utilizes twin NRE 88mm turbochargers, twin intercoolers, and a computer-controlled dual-injection system that switches automatically between 91 and 116 octane fuel when the octane threshold is reached."
Aluminum 572 Hemi Long Block
This Gen II Hemi features an aluminum block and cylinder heads for some major weight savings. A solid roller camshaft and shaft mounted roller rockers boost reliability on this 700 HP power plant.
The 392 Hemi V8 is a 6.4L engine that delivers 485 horsepower with 475 lb-ft of torque. This engine achieves 0-60 mph in just over 4 seconds and is available only on the R/T Scat Pack model.
Displacement: 318 cu in (5.2 L)
Add a turbo to a junkyard Hemi, and you'll be up to your eyeballs in horsepower! Having successfully applied low-buck, 76mm, eBay turbo systems to both the Chevy LS and Ford Modular engines, we decided to try doing the same thing to a modern 5.7L Hemi.
The 426 Hemi was retired in 1971.
Its thunderous exhaust tone and screaming intake noises (from sucking mass quantities of oxygen into its dual four-barrel carburetors) were a tell-tale sign when the 426 HEMI engine got unleashed.
5.7L Hemi - The smallest modern Hemi engine, called the Eagle, introduced in 2002.
